    A mutation profile for top-kappa patient search exploiting Gene-Ontology and orthogonal non-negative matrix factorization

    Motivation: As the quantity of genomic mutation data increases, the likelihood of finding patients with similar genomic profiles, for various disease inferences, increases. However, so does the difficulty in identifying them. Similarity search based on patient mutation profiles can solve various translational bioinformatics tasks, including prognostics and treatment efficacy predictions for better clinical decision making through large volume of data. However, this is a challenging problem due to heterogeneous and sparse characteristics of the mutation data as well as their high dimensionality. Results: To solve this problem we introduce a compact representation and search strategy based on Gene-Ontology and orthogonal non-negative matrix factorization. Statistical significance between the identified cancer subtypes and their clinical features are computed for validation; results show that our method can identify and characterize clinically meaningful tumor subtypes comparable or better in most datasets than the recently introduced Network-Based Stratification method while enabling real-time search.     The effect of glutamine supplement on small intestinal morphology and xylose absorptive ability of weaned piglets

    The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the effects of glutamine (Gln) supplement on small intestinal  morphology, xylose absorptive and growth performance of weaned piglets. Forty eight piglets weaned at 28 ± 2 days of age were randomly allotted to three treatment groups. A basal corn-soybean diet was formulated to contain 20.3% protein and 3450 kcal DE/kg diet. Glutamine was supplemented to the basal diet at 0% (control), 1% (Gln 1%) and 2% (Gln 2%). Pigs were fed experimental diets for three weeks. The results  showed that the villous height of the Gln groups tended higher than the control group in duodenum and jejunum (P < 0.1). Glutamine supplementation increased plasma net xylose absorptive concentration from 0.78 to 1.20 and 0.95 to 1.23 in Gln 1% and Gln 2% group, respectively, which were better than the control group (0.86 to 0.97) in day 7 to 14 after weaning. Growth performance was not significantly affected by Gln supplement;  however, average daily gain was approximately improved from 21 to 28% by Gln supplement compared to the control group during 21 days of experimental period. In summary, the results suggested that dietary  supplementation of Gln could be beneficial in small intestinal villous morphology and xylose absorptive  capacity, and could have a slight contribution to the average daily gain of weaned piglets.Key words: Glutamine, growth performance, intestinal morphology, weaned piglets

    Do communicators' emotional expressions in dance-themed visual expressions in humanities documentaries depend on the visual guidance of dance camera language? There is limited information related to humanities documentaries with dance as a theme in the literature. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the creator's visual guidance on an audience's perception of dance images. Based on a humanities documentary’s overall tone, the communicator selected appropriate dance sequences and dance clips and recorded them from a dancer's point of view to capture an image's moral expression and bring the humanities documentary to a climax. The study explored whether an audience’s perspective of visual information from a dance in which the dance body language is guided by a video varies from that perceived when watching the dance in the past. This analysis opens up new avenues for video display and dance representation for the expression of dance video, to satisfy an audience's sense of observation and communicate an emotional expression

    Antioxidant, antibacterial and α-glucosidase inhibitory activities of different extracts of Cortex Moutan

    Different extracts of Cortex Moutan (CM) were investigated for their antioxidant, antibacterial and α- glucosidase inhibitory activities. The content of paeonol was quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results show that the yield of acetone extract (57.14%) was significantly higher than those of other solvents. The ethyl-acetate extract exhibited maximum paeonol concentration (60.69 μg/ml), good antibacterial activities (MIC = 100 μg/ml) against Escherichia coli and possessed significant α-glucosidase inhibitory activity. In addition, among all of the extracts, ethylacetate extract demonstrated a high total phenolic value of 127.12 ± 1.42 mg GAE/g, high DPPH radical scavenging activity with an IC50 of 19.88 ± 0.26 μg/ml, and significant reducing power, suggesting that CM is a potential source of natural antioxidants.Key words: Cortex Moutan, antioxidant, 11-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl hydrate (DPPH), reducing power, antibacterial, α-glucosidas

    Legal and Regulatory Challenges of the Sharing Economy

    This policy brief examines the issues raised by the emergence of huge companies such as Uber in the UK and Didi in China that operate in the so-called ‘sharing economy’. The business model of these companies represents a fundamental realignment of the relations between capital and labour, and raises questions about the liability for public safety, the need to preserve the jobs of traditional ‘offline’ operators, and the unfair use of consumers’ personal data. The authors examine recent cases involving Uber and Transport for London which saw the company’s licence temprarily suspended, and the 2016 ruling in favour of two Uber drivers which recognized them as employees under UK employment law, rather than as independent contractors or self-employed. The brief concludes that the rapid expansion and diversification of the sharing economy requires carefully crafted measures that can be implemented by existing regulatory bodies, or by new and alternative forms of regulators altogether

    Fast privacy-preserving network function outsourcing

    In this paper, we present the design and implementation of SplitBox, a system for privacy-preserving processing of network functions outsourced to cloud middleboxes—i.e., without revealing the policies governing these functions. SplitBox is built to provide privacy for a generic network function that abstracts the functionality of a variety of network functions and associated policies, including firewalls, virtual LANs, network address translators (NATs), deep packet inspection, and load balancers. We present a scalable design aiming to provide high throughput and low latency, by distributing functionalities to a few virtual machines (VMs), while providing provably secure guarantees. We implement SplitBox inside FastClick, an extension of the Click modular router, using Intel's DPDK to handle packet I/O. We evaluate our prototype experimentally to find its bottlenecks and stress-test its different components, vis-à-vis two widely used network functions, i.e., firewall and VLAN tagging. Our evaluation shows that, on commodity hardware, SplitBox can process packets close to line rate (i.e., 8.9Gbps) with up to 50 traversed policies
